Buxa Tiger Reserve

Buxa Tiger reserve is close to Alipurduar and Cooch Behar but visiting this site requires Tourist to start from Siliguri as the options and the drive are better. This tiger reserve is close to Bhutan border. The reserve is spread over 759 square kilometers as per the record of the government. It is close to Alipurduar nearly 180 kilometers from Siliguri close to the National highway number 31. Government of India has banned Safari in all the tiger reserve to save tigers from October, 2010. This is one of the best reserve forests in this region and has fascinating diversity of flora and fauna. Buxa Tiger reserve extends to form the Phipsoo National Park in Bhutan just across the river Jayanti. This acts as one of the main corridors of Elephant movement from India to Bhutan and to Assam.

The reserve is dense with huge trees sheltering orchids and a few water bodies with Rasikbill as the biggest. The ambience is fascinating with dense growth, huge trees, sounds of birds, animals and insects, stretches of grassland and the bank of river Jayanti. There are a few religious places around this region which are also attraction of tourists and locals. A small pond on hilltop with tortoise, fishes and birds attracts travelers and is worth visiting. The park was declared as National Park since 1992 and the name Buxa was derived from a Fort used for detainees during freedom movement of India. A trek of nearly 14 kilometers will take tourist near it. Mahakal a religious center is 6 kilometers trek from Jayanti and can be done in a day.
